Students must identify an area of particular interest within the general sphere of the Symbolic Systems subject matter, and design a coherent set of courses around this.

Students should discuss course selection with their advisors, and carefully look through the Stanford Bulletin for the most relevant current offerings. A list of suggested potential advisors is on each of the concentrations' pages.

The Program Directorate is open to requests to allow courses that are not currently listed as options for fulfilling a major requirement. See Nominations and Petitions.
