M.S. Admissions

The M.S. cohort in Symbolic Systems is comprised of three groups of students

  • Stanford Coterminal Students: Stanford students pursuing an undergraduate degree and the Symsys MS degree at the same time
  • Stanford Internal Graduate Students: Stanford graduate students from the Law School, Graduate School of Business, etc, who are pursuing an additional M.S. degree
  • External Students: Students coming from outside of Stanford, admitted through the external application process

Each year we admit a limited number of students from each category to form our incoming cohort. In general, Stanford coterminal and internal students complete the program in the equivalent of one academic year while external students complete the program in two years or less, depending on a student's level of preparation.

The Symbolic Systems Program recognizes that the Supreme Court issued a ruling in June 2023 about the consideration of certain types of demographic information as part of an admission review. All applications submitted during upcoming application cycles will be reviewed in conformance with that decision.
