ABSTRACT:

Cheryl Phillips will go through the history of data journalism, briefly touching on its historical roots, its modern inception, early years and then will delve more deeply into a more recent shift toward larger, data-driven collaborative investigative journalism. She will talk about how data journalism has borrowed tools and techniques from social science and is now doing the same in more technical areas, such as using machine-learning and NLP. At the end, she will discuss how Big Local News at Stanford aims to help scale local journalism by using computational methods.
