DESCRIPTION: You are invited to participate in a research study
on possible word orders in Bulgarian and their interaction with information structure.
The types of questions that will be asked are of two types, either fill-in-the-blank or
grammaticality judgment. In the fill-in-the-blank experiment, you will be asked to
complete a sentence, in whatever way you think it can be completed. In the
grammaticality judgment test, you will be asked to rate the grammaticality (i.e. goodness
)
of a series of sentences with respect to a reference sentence.
The purpose of this research is to determine what word orders are acceptable for you as a native speaker of Bulgarian (you also have to be of age 18 or older).
We will not "test" your knowledge of a prescriptive grammar, good "style" or school knowledge about written language. Instead
we are interested in your personal judgment/opinion about how "good" the sentences
sound to you. We ask you to tell us how acceptable the sentences we will present to you would sound in an informal, every day conversation (e.g. with a friend). Data that you provide will be given codes so that reference to your name
will never be made (in fact, your name is not even included in the data set).
RISKS AND BENEFITS: There are no foreseeable risks or discomfort that might result from participation in this study. Beyond pleasure derived by way of participating in a language experiment, there are no benefits either.
TIME INVOLVEMENT: Your participation in this experiment will take approximately 20-30 minutes.
PAYMENTS: You will receive no payment for your participation.
