  • SUMMER INTERNSHIP OPPORTUNITY WITH STARTUP INCUBATED AT NEA

    Posted on Jun 29, 2009.
Last updated on Jun 29, 2009.

    Job Description:

Quantios helps guide students through one of the most important decisions of
their young adult lives. We develop decision support tools for the 4.2
million teenagers that leave home for university each year, and the
professionals that help them with their college choices. Our flagship
    product is AcceptEdge (www.acceptedge.com <http://www.acceptedge.com/> );
we're also developing tools for colleges to identify talent that matches
their needs, and software for high schools to help them advise their
    students.

We're looking for engineering interns to help us build out acceptedge.com
    <http://acceptedge.com/> <http://acceptedge.com/> this summer. You'll be
working on immediately important contributions in direct collaboration with
the founders, and have the opportunity to gain insight into the operations
of the company as we work to build partnerships and bring AcceptEdge to
market this summer. We've raised a small round of angel financing already,
and are working from incubator space at New Enterprise Associates
    (www.nea.com <http://www.nea.com/> ) on Sand Hill Road.

In terms of coding, lots of experience with HTML and CSS should be a given.
Specifically, we're looking for experience with (in order of importance):
    - PHP,
    - Python, and,
    - MySQL.

95% of our core code is PHP 5, but the back-end math and other heavy lifting
is in Python. We use MySQL for persistent storage, and memcached on top of
that. We're looking for motivated, self-starting engineers who can think
for themselves and work independently without supervision on parts of a
complex whole. You don't have to be one of the best in the world (yet) as
long as you're willing to learn.

The college admission process is highly stressful and incredibly
inefficient. We're working to turn it into a science, and improve outcomes
for both students and universities. There's a lot that can be done when
data enters education, and we're just getting started.

    About TechSoup Global:

TechSoup Global is a nonprofit organization that has been successful in creating a suite of high impact services
that facilitate corporate philanthropy and benefit community service organizations in a financially sustainable
model. For more than two decades, our mission has been to work toward the day when every community service
organization on the planet has access to the technology resources and information they need to achieve their own
missions. Founded in 1987, we currently have more than 170 staff members and an annual budget of about $23
million. TechSoup Global helps other nonprofits better serve their missions by acquiring and using technology,
implementing web and social networking, and receiving grant funding and product donations.

Working with capacity-building partners across the world, TechSoup Global is actively expanding our program
    outside the <?xml:namespace prefix = st1 ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:smarttags" />US. We establish
partnerships with in-country NGOs to implement our highly effective product donation program, while adapting to
local business practices, laws, and cultural imperatives. In the process, we're building a global network of
partners all focused on empowering NGOs through the effective use of technology. We're in 22 countries to date and
    adding more each month.

Through our TechSoup Stock website, nonprofits find a broad range of software donated by leading tech companies
such as Microsoft, Cisco, Symantec, Intuit, and Adobe, along with content and community resources tailored
specifically for a nonprofit audience. To date we have enabled over $1 billion in technology donations world
    wide.

Based upon the strength of our global network, our expertise in building scalable web systems, our history of
working both with donors and with recipient NGOs, and our experience building one of the fastest growing
sustainable social enterprises, TechSoup Global was recently selected to build a new service for international
philanthropy. Backed by major foundations and key philanthropy sector partners, this new service will create a
global database of nonprofits and NGOs, making it easier and less costly for international grantmakers to provide
cash grants to social benefit organizations in countries outside the U.S.

TechSoup Global is dedicated to creating and supporting an environment of openness, trust, and fun where people's
differences are valued and respected, and where people of diverse backgrounds participate fully in our

Last updated on Apr 20, 2009.

    Job Description:

    We love delighting users.
We don't expect our average user to notice consistent button margins, a one-click buddy icon selection user flow, or a background image that updates depending upon the screen size. However, we attribute much of Meebo's growth to our users discovering Meebo, experiencing delight, and then having a deep desire to share that experience with their friends. To cultivate this process, we relentlessly strive to understand our users and are passionate about fostering a creative, open-minded atmosphere within Meebo. We don't always get it right—however, with user feedback, we keep trying and trying and trying.

  • Trading Engineer (for Cerebellum Capital, Inc)

    Posted on Jun 2, 2008.
Last updated on Jun 2, 2008.

    Job Description:

Cerebellum Capital is a recently started hedge fund management firm whose investment programs are continuously designed, executed, and improved by a software system based on techniques from statistical machine learning. We’re looking to hire some excellent individuals to round out our team, including a Trading Engineer.

    SCOPE AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Trading engineers for Cerebellum Capital, Inc will report directly to the CTO and will be responsible for a significant area of the company’s technical expertise. Unlike a traditional baseline software engineering job, trading engineers at CCI will have the opportunity to design the systems for which they are responsible and will be expected to handle design, specification, testing, implementation, evaluation, and maintenance of significant software systems. Responsibilities for this position will include developing, delivering and maintaining a reliable, extendible & cross- product real-time FIX enabled trading platform that addresses execution, straight-through processing, intelligent pricing, auto-quoting, risk management, and internal markets. Use of broker-specific APIs may be required. Candidates with more experience will be expected to take on the management of more systems and possibly to serve as team lead for various projects.

    PERSONAL ATTRIBUTES

A background in financial engineering is a plus. The desired skill set includes algorithmic trading, mastery of the FIX protocol, and engineering of direct market access trading platforms. This person must be a top-notch programmer in addition to having the knowledge of financial systems, and should be fluent in at least two of the following: .NET/C#, Java, C++. Candidates should have FIX and/or CMS experience. Any experience working with ECNs (Archipelago, Instinet, etc), as well as NASD, NYSE with experience in other liquidity points (ATD, Lava Trading, Pipeline, etc) and Global Exchanges (Brazil, Canada, HK, Japan, Mexico, UK, etc) would be considered a huge plus. Candidates should have experience with UNIX shell scripting in Perl, Python, PHP or Ruby.

Intelligence, cleverness, curiosity and wisdom are required. Strong attention to detail is vital, but candidates must be able to deliver completed projects in a fast-paced, deadline oriented environment (fast and good is better than slow and best). Excellent programming skills are a must (ability to hack and write good code). Must have the inquisitiveness to question bugs or oddities and chase them down until they are fixed. Candidates should possess excellent speaking and presentation skills, and the ability to work in a cross functional environment. Strong cultural alignment is VERY important: all hires will have respect for self and others, high integrity, a strong work ethic, a results orientation, a team orientation, and a focus on the customer.

    EDUCATION

A degree in engineering, mathematics, or a scientific discipline or equivalent experience is required.

  • Right Media on campus April 11th-13th for Spring Career Fair

    Posted on Apr 3, 2007.
Last updated on Apr 3, 2007.

    Job Description:

Not sure how to use your SymSys degree after graduation?

Come chat with us about Right Media.

Why might you want to work for us?
    * Interdisciplinary mindset... Ad-hoc cross-functional groups form every day to solve business or technical problems.
    * Innovative technology... We do really cool sh*t. Our platform hosts a live auction between 60000 participants ~50000 times per second. Even with that kind of data, we're able to provide hourly reporting on 2-3 billion transactions each day.
    * Startup mentality... Although we've grown to 200 people and 5 satellite offices, we still very much have a startup mentality, with small business groups forming regularly to tackle new market issues and an extremely welcoming, collaborative atmosphere.
    * Meritocracy... Individuals that thrive are quickly rewarded with more responsibility and larger projects
    * Financial stability and likelihood of success... Having strong industry partnerships and being recognized as one of the most innovative, forward-thinking companies in the market, we're no longer questioning whether of not we'll be successful, rather _how_ successful we'll be.

A dynamic, New York City based company in the online media industry, we spend every day using SymSys-related design and problem solving skills to build technology solutions for the first open market exchange of interactive advertising where publishers and advertisers can buy and sell digital media. A few months ago, Yahoo led our most recent round of funding to earn a 20% stake in the business.

Don't worry if you have no experience in the industry- a lot of us didn't when we started, either.

Visiting from Manhattan, (all Stanford alums:) two Product Managers (one History Masters and one SymSys/ Neuroscience Undergrad), a Solutions Analyst (SymSys/ Decision Making and Rationality), and a Software Developer (Math Undergrad + PhD elsewhere) will be out at Stanford for a few days, and we'd love to talk to SymSys students about what they can do for us with their tezzie degree. We have many open positions that would be a great fit for SymSys grads.

  • RightMedia interviewing at CoHo this Wednesday morning

    Posted on Dec 3, 2006.
Last updated on Dec 3, 2006.

    Job Description:

Thinking about a job or internship?

A few weeks ago, Yahoo led our most recent round of funding to earn a 20% stake in the business.

Don't worry if you have no experience in the industry- a lot of us didn't when we started, either.

Visiting from Manhattan, our CTO, Brian O'Kelley, and I will be out at Stanford for a few days, and we'd love to talk to SymSys students about what they can do for us with their tezzie degree. We have many open positions that would be a great fit for SymSys grads or interns.

If you'd like to meet up for a casual interview, send me an email: edavis at rightmedia dot com. We're thinking Wednesday morning at the CoHo would be easiest for students. Coffee on us! Plus, maybe, a job.
